The IRONMAN World Championship takes place on the Island of Hawai`i in Kailua-Kona. The swim segment begins and ends at Kailua Pier. The bike race travels north on the Kona Coast through scorching lava fields and then along the Kohala Coast to the small village of Hawi, returning along the same route to transition. The marathon course travels through Kailua-Kona and on to the same highway, the Queen Ka`ahumanu, used for the bike course. Athletes then run back into Kailua-Kona, coming down Ali`i Drive to the cheers of thousands of spectators at the finish line.Back to top

Withdrawal requests must be received in writing via e-mail to . Without exception, all requests must be received on or before August 29, 2019 to be eligible for a partial refund of $175.00 (USD). Deferments are NOT permitted.
Athletes who are unable to attend the event are eligible to transfer their entry into a 2019 North America IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 race that has general entry slots available. Transfer requests will be honored until August 29, 2019. For more information on this initiative, click here or contact.
If an athlete purchases the Full Refund Plan and has a claim granted, the athlete waives eligibility to an additional partial refund or transfer.

USA Triathlon will sanction IRONMAN World Championship. To complete the online registration process, athletes will need to enter their USAT annual license number or purchase a one-day license ($15.00 USD) or annual license ($50.00) during online registration. Athletes must bring their photo identification and show proof of current USAT membership during Athlete Check-In. Otherwise, it will be required to purchase a one day license on-site. Yes. Because IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events adhere to the ITU Middle and Long Distance rules, IRONMAN has applied for and been granted dispensation by USA Triathlon on several areas of rules and penalty enforcement. These rules and their enforcement will be consistent throughout IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events. Water temperatures are expected to be around 79 degrees Fahrenheit. There is usually no surf, but athlete may encounter small swells parallel to the course. Wind chop does not usually occur early in the morning. Currents may vary, but are usually weak when moving across the course.Back to top
Swimwear (Skinsuits/Speedsuits) must be 100% textile material, which is defined as materials consisting of natural and/or synthetic, individual and non-consolidated yarns used to constitute a fabric by weaving, knitting and/or braiding. Simply put, this would generally refer to suits made only from nylon or Lycra that do not have any rubberized material such as polyurethane or neoprene. Swimwear must not cover the neck, extend past the elbows, nor extend past the knees. Swimwear may contain a zipper. A textile race kit may be worn underneath swimwear, provided, however, that the textile race kit must not extend past the elbow and must not extend past the knees.
Wetsuits are not allowed for professional competitors or age group competitors under the age of 70. Athletes aged 70 and older are allowed to use wetsuits, which must be 5mm thick or less. If an athlete aged 70 or older elects to use a wetsuit the athlete will not be eligible for an age group award. They will however, be an “official” finisher.Back to top
No. Clothing that extends past the elbows, or knees will not be permitted in non-wetsuit swims[CB1] and will result in disqualification. This includes compression sleeves, compression socks, or compression tights. Clothing or compression wear that extends past the elbow or knees MAY, however, be worn during the cycling and running segments.
Temperatures on race day range from 82 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, with the humidity hovering around 90 percent. Crosswinds on portions of the bike course sometimes get as high as 60 mph.Back to top

Competitors have 17 hours to finish the race, and cut-off times are applied to each segment.
SWIM: The cut off for the swim segment is 2 hours 20 minutes after your designated start time.
BIKE: The bike cut off for the bike course is 10 hours and 30 minutes after your designated start time.
RUN: The cut off time for the IRONMAN World Championship is 17 hours after your designated start time.

Friends and/or family members are not permitted to cross the finish line or enter the finish chute with participating athletes. This policy allows each competitor adequate time to celebrate their accomplishment without interfering with other finishers and ensure the safety of all participants, volunteers, and fans. Athletes who choose not to respect the policy will receive an automatic disqualification (DQ).Back to top
Unfortunately, due to high congestion in the finish line area, no spectators will be allowed. Please do not try to gain access to this area, as it must remain clear for the safety of the athletes.
