Breeze riders gear up for VELOTHON Wales
The UK Breeze programme is inspiring women across the country to kickstart their healthier lifestyles by taking on VELOTHON Wales.
While many were celebrating Mother’s Day weekend with breakfast in bed, a group of determined women were donning their cycling shoes and hitting the roads in preparation for their biggest challenge yet on Sunday 9th July.
Earlier this year, Welsh Cycling offered 15 women the opportunity to take on the challenge of VELOTHON Wales, the country’s largest closed-road cycling sportive . The Breeze riders will join forces to tackle either of the stunning 110km or 140km routes alongside up to 16,000 cycling enthusiasts and some of the world’s best pro riders.
Women across the United Kingdom are coming together to get back on their bikes for fitness and fun. To be able to get from 0km – 110km (or 140km!) before July’s VELOTHON Wales, our Team Breeze riders will be supported by Breeze Champions and Welsh Cycling coaches with regular rides and coaching sessions in their regions.
Marilea Schofield from Wrexham has used the HSBC UK Breeze programme to boost her active retirement. And after rediscovering her love of cycling, she is ready to overcome Wales’ largest sportive.
“I was fed up with cycling by myself; it was lonely and I lacked motivation. My first Breeze ride was 18 miles, and easier than I thought! I met some lovely women and talked all the way round. I fell in love with my bike again!
“Now that I am retired, I don’t want to be perceived as an old shrinking violet; I want to rise to the challenge!”
Cyclists will leave Cardiff to the east, heading through Newport and Usk before entering the Brecon Beacons National Park. 140km riders will push on to the legendary Tumble climb whilst 110km riders will bypass the mountain by heading south towards Pontypool, re-joining the 140km route ahead of the Caerphilly Mountain climb. Both routes conclude with a fast descent towards the finish line in the heart of Cardiff City Centre.
Georgina Harper, National Development Manager at Welsh Cycling said: “Women’s cycling is continuing to grow across the country, fuelled by the HSBC UK Breeze programme. Breeze is all about fun and friendly bike rides, and breaking down the barriers women face in participation. We now have more than 100 Breeze Champions leading bike rides for women in Wales, and supporting them to complete their personal challenges. Whether that be 5km around their local park, or 140km of VELOTHON Wales, women are continuing to inspire Wales to cycle.”
If the 140km route’s challenging climb up the ‘Tumble’ is not for you, why not take on our new 110km course. Cyclists of all fitness levels will be able to follow the shorter route, which avoids the arduous climb up the Tumble and reduces the elevation by half to 940 metres. Entries are limited in the 110km so time is running out to claim your space, with less than 200 remaining.
Whether you're a seasoned sportive rider, an IRONMAN in training, a charity fundraiser or a newbie to cycling, we can't wait to welcome you to the VELOTHON Wales start line, whatever your ambition or ability level.
