Spectator Information

Some of the world’s most famous professional cycling teams and riders will battle it out on Sunday 9th July as they compete for the coveted VELOTHON Wales crown.

Thousands of spectators will line the iconic route looking to catch a glimpse of their family and friends taking part in the amateur sportive or the professional riders in the UCI sanctioned race.

Whether you have friends or family taking part, want to catch a glimpse of the Pro’s or just fancy taking in the incredible atmosphere as thousands of cyclists pass through on traffic-free roads, you won’t want to miss a moment of this year’s VELOTHON Wales!

With roads closed to facilitate the safe passage of participants, deciding on where to spectate may depend on where you live – but maps detailing road closures and advice on navigating them with diversionary routes and crossing points can be found here. Do not attempt to cross or drive on closed roads. Details on Community Events happening around the route can be found here.

The route leaves Cardiff to the east, heading through Newport and Usk, before entering the Brecon Beacons National Park, home of the legendary Tumble climb – a highlight of the route! – and home to the VELOTHON Wales “King and Queen of the Mountains Challenge”. The route then heads south via Pontypool and Newbridge on its way to Caerphilly for one final climb up the stunning Caerphilly mountain, before finishing with a fast descent towards the finish line, in the heart of Cardiff city centre.

The 140KM and 110KM routes can be seen above. Below, you’ll see the times you can expect to see amateur and professional riders pass through various local areas.

Feed stations, where riders will be stopping to refuel and rehydrate, are located on Maryport Street in Usk, Ty Nant Ddu Resource Centre in Pontnewyndd and at the Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar at the top of Caerphilly Mountain.
