Road Closures and Queries

Resident / Local Queries

On Sunday 8th July 2018, the annual VELOTHON Wales will return to the roads of South Wales, welcoming thousands of recreational cyclists and charity fundraisers.

To facilitate the safe passage of participants, it will be necessary to implement road closures/parking restrictions along the route. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience and assure disruption will be kept to a minimum. We wish to thank you for your understanding and are grateful of your support and cooperation.

A new event format means road closure timings will be significantly reduced in 2018.

Road closure timings are not yet available for 2018, but for reference, a route and access overview map from 2017 can be seen below.

If you are aware of anything that will impact you on 8th July such as formal events, carer responsibilities or holiday travel, please let us know. Our contact details can be seen here.

In 2017, we worked closely with the five affected local authorities to develop a rolling road closure system which allowed sections of the route to re-open between the amateur and professional cyclists, ending the all-day closures of recent years. This gave an opportunity for residents to move away from the event if they need to. In 2018, an event format change means that a professional cycle race will not proceed the amateurs, allowing roads to re-open far earlier.

Detailed localised maps for 2018, with diversionary routes and crossing points will be made available as soon as possible.

If you are not taking part we encourage you to turn out on the day to join the thousands of spectators who will be cheering on the cyclists. Look out for the best places to spectate or community events happening in your area on the day and in the build up.

There are also plenty of exciting volunteering opportunities available, should you wish to get involved in Wales’ biggest ever cycling event.
