Spectator Information

Thousands of cyclists will take to the streets of South Wales on Sunday 8th July for the 4th edition of the VELOTHON Wales.

Thousands of spectators will line the iconic route looking to catch a glimpse of their family and friends taking part in the amateur sportive.

With roads closed to facilitate the safe passage of participants, deciding on where to spectate may depend on where you live – but maps detailing road closures and advice on navigating them with diversionary routes and crossing points can be found here. Do not attempt to cross or drive on closed roads. Details on Community Events happening around the route can be found here.

The route leaves Cardiff to the east, heading through Newport and Usk, before entering the Brecon Beacons National Park, home of the legendary Tumble climb – a highlight of the route! – and home to the VELOTHON Wales “King and Queen of the Mountains Challenge”. The route then heads south via Pontypool and Newbridge on its way to Caerphilly for one final climb up the stunning Caerphilly mountain, before finishing with a fast descent towards the finish line, in the heart of Cardiff city centre.

The 140KM and 110KM routes from 2017 can be seen above. 2018 routes will be confirmed soon.

Below, you’ll see the times you amateur and professional riders passed through various local areas in 2017. Updated timings for 2018 will be posted here soon, to help you plan your day if you wish to spectate.

In 2017, feed stations, where riders stopped to refuel and rehydrate, were located on Maryport Street in Usk, Ty Nant Ddu Resource Centre in Pontnewyndd and at the Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar at the top of Caerphilly Mountain. Updated locations for 2018 will be posted here soon, too.
