City Hospice Joins Forces with VELOTHON Wales

Thousands of riders will have the chance to raise vital funds for City Hospice by tackling the Tumble at VELOTHON Wales 2018.

Cardiff’s local hospice has teamed up with Wales’ largest cycling sportive as an Associated Charity ahead of race-day on July 8. City Hospice is the capital’s the major provider of specialist palliative care for cancer patients and families.

Their specialist services are available to help those recently diagnosed with cancer understand what is happening to them, explain their choices and provide support for as long as they need it.

Cycling enthusiasts can get behind City Hospice and their selfless work by joining their team. Riders can sign up to take-on Wales’ biggest closed-road cycling event for free if they pledge to raise £480, which will pay for a whole 24 hours of nursing care.

City Hospice CEO, Mike Walsh, said: “Everyone at City Hospice is hugely excited to be part of Velothon Wales 2018!  We can’t wait to start welcoming cyclists to our team and raising lots of money to support Cardiff’s local hospice!  We are sure the event will be a massive success and we are delighted to be involved.”

Last year City Hospice supported over 1,000 people at the most difficult time in their lives. Riders will also receive a cycling vest to show their support along the popular route, which includes a city centre start and finish and gruelling climbs up the famous Tumble and Caerphilly Mountain. Once riders have completed the 140KM course, City Hospice will be celebrating with a post-race reception.

Run 4 Wales Chief Executive, Matt Newman, said: “City Hospice provides vital care and support for patients and families across the Welsh capital. We hope VELOTHON Wales can provide the platform for Cardiff’s local hospice to raise the money they need so they never have to turn anyone away.

“We cannot wait to welcome the City Hospice team on race-day as they join thousands of cycling enthusiasts hit the streets of Cardiff.”

The 2018 event returns on Sunday 8th July and will see a host of exciting changes, including enhanced event experience, a new celebratory food and drink zone at the finish and race pack postage included - meaning athletes no longer have to arrive a day early to pick up race essentials.
